SSL - Moving towards a more secure web

SSL certificates from an authorized Certifixare authority such as geotrust or verisign will cost you money. No way around that. Technically anyone can create their own SSL certificate and have it loaded on the web server. The reason why we pay so much money for one from an authorized authority is because they have already established the trust with everyone via their browsers. The root signer certificates are already in our browsers. If you know how to use OpenSSL you can create your own self signed certificate and it will work (e.g. You will see https working) BUT no one will trust your site and even if they did trust, they would need to manually add the signer root certain into their browser and we all know that isn't going to happen - lost customers.

Question for Yaros : The hosting that you guys provide, am I able to use third party certs ? Or will I encouter the same problem ?

You can use any any SSL with our hosting. Actually when you have a hosting with cPanel the installation of SSL certificate is quite easy.

hey subvigil this may help

https://webhostinggeeks.com/bestecommercehosting.html

I am with hostgator same problem and I am trying to upgrade to business plan which is a few dollars more. So, far hostgator customer service has been crap. If this does not work I change to another provider and move my sites (hope i don't have to)..

good luck
Hey Mathew,
I have HostGator's Business-Class Cloud Hosting platform as well, and while it performs reasonably well (not quite decided if it's worth the extra money or not tbh), they do not have the built-in ability to generate a CSR, like you could from a normal Linux or Windows server - or from WHS, for that matter. Thankfully, when I upgraded to the business class, I did get the dedicated IP and had a free cert to go along with it, but that really only helps with the first site. I have about 20 other domains that I will likely use. I would love to figure out a way to use LetsEncrypt and automate the renewal on their platform.

Okay, so I've bought a SSL Cert and contacted my host.

Seems I'm on shared hosting and can't use the cert, and can only use a very expensive cert that they provide.

Any other options to get the HTTPS working ?

You can use any third-party companies for SSL.

btw, I am using now SSL certificate from Namecheap and I like it, only $9 per year. Here you will find the detailed instructions on how to buy and setup it: https://alidropship.com/codex/7-ssl-certificate-installation/

I use Let's Encrypt for cPanel in my sites and it's free and working fine.
The hosting companies I work with had it installed or installed it at my request.
It provides me SSL for free. Maybe not as powerful as a paid SSL but enough for me. No problems at all.
@KawwaK
Did you encounter any issues with Let's Encrypt as far as activating? My cpanel also has this and I'd like to try it.

Great thanks for reactivating my account Yaros! I've now got the green padlock...woohoo!!
For anyone else moving to SSL some tips. I learned the hard way

4. Use a plugin like "Better Search Replace" to replace hard coded http calls in your database (make sure you backup your database first and do a dry run)

All the best!
@Hstar
I just posted about this on my site and i'm seeing a bunch of theme images not behind the https.
What did you replace your links with? Reletive url's? I'm trying to figure out the format.

If this is the offending link

What would you replace it with? This?

Right, when you setup SSL your domain is changed. We need to re-activate your license key. The support will contact you shortly.

Good morning,
I've had the same problem. It will be possible to perform automatically the license update? Now, I've wrote to the support, but receiving just an automatic answer whit out any real answer in terms of time is not fair..

Thank you.
