What are your Price Markups

GaneaDaniel

New Member
My price markup are:

1 0 < cost < $1 cost = 6.95
2 $1 < cost < $2 cost = 7.95
3 $2 < cost < $5 cost * 3.5
4 $5 < cost < $10 cost * 2.5
5 $10 < cost < $30 cost * 2
6 $30 < cost < $50 cost * 1.65
7 $50 < cost < $100 cost * 1.5
8 $100 < cost < $500 cost * 1.35

I have thought of these markup prices because these also include that $0-$5 ePacket shipping.
My question now is ... are these prices to high or acceptable?

Thanks in advance for your input :)

Good morning Daniel,

Great question I might add. This has been in the back of my mind ever since I purchased the plugin and started building my store.

I guess setting your prices depends on a few things like:

1) The level of service your customers expect to receive
2) Your customer's persona (who are you selling to)
3) The products that you are selling
4) Your competition
5) Your expenses
6) Your shipping options
7) Your original investment
8) The amounts of chargebacks and returns you're getting
9) What your time is worth and what you expect to receive as net profit at the end of the month compared to your sales
10) Your income tax bracket
11) Compensating for sales fraud
12) Legal costs from lawsuits
13) Cost of inventory management (in some cases)
14) Accountant cost for sales tax advice
etc
So in my opinion there is no straight answer to your question.

Since you've posted your markups I will post mine also so you can compare.
I'm selling merchandise that cater to Beauty & Fashion and I'm trying to be as fair as possible with my price schedule

BTW I have kindly asked the developers (through this forum) to enable/create CSV importing to the pricing markup formula because having to enter all these lines by hand is a royal pain in the butt.
I have not received an answer yet, but I certainly hope they will see this in a positive manner.

Hi there and thanks a lot of your input :)
Ok I have a general store(bad idea from the start I know)
Don`t have yet a company registered(until I test the waters and get some traction after which I will register a company - which might result in 0 VAT*since I am from a EU country* but the income profit that I will be giving to the state would be 16-18% - from what research I made so far on this matter and the type of business will be eligible with this kind of business)
I will try to be online as much as possible and also will use an online chat in order to communicate with my visitors/possible clients or even with the clients in case they encounter any problems.
I was thinking for like a month to offer instead of a discount the next stuff: all clients that buy 2 products to receive a 3rd at no extra charge(not sure yet how to do it but I will eventually find a wp plugin to do so).
My shipping for now will be free and on the way I plan in using(especially once I will start doing FB ads) Free + Shipping(that means they pay the shipping and the product is free of charge - for those that do now know this term or whats about).

Hello again Daniel,

I think everyone should create a general store in the beginning just to 'test what sells most' and then move on to a niche store.
By general I don't mean a replica of AliExpress....
I mean a store with a wide product category comprising of a few items each.

So as an example a health & beauty themed store can have a few products from a wide category of items like brushes, bags, clothing, accessories, jewelry etc but not electronics and household items.

Out of that store you can then see what interests your customers most and after a couple of months you can build your niche store - based on your results - with a more focused approach.
This of course is all in theory because every day we hear stories about people making money in both really wide as well as in tightly focused niches.

Anyhow, I appreciate your reply and I hope you start making some money soon. Keep us posted.
Best regards.

BTW Here is some information regarding charging TAX since you mentioned it
The Drop Shipping business model is the most complicated relationship in sales tax.

You can also go to YouTube and search for "sales tax for dropshipping" that will give you a lot of information.

Thanks a lot for this list.
Also around how many products/category should I use ... 5-10 or? :)

You know Daniel, I can't really say because I do not have the long term experience of an ecommerce seller.

I've been involved in digital marketing, online promotion, web design and development for the past 20 years so that's mainly my area of expertise.

I'm very very new to creating my own store, although I have created many stores for my clients, but then they already had a brick and mortar operation wishing to expand online with proven products and services.

Having your own store and testing out niches and products is totally different. I don't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction. Perhaps there are some experienced sellers on this forum that might be able to enlighten us on this subject.

I would personally choose between 5 to 10 products depending on supply and demand BUT... First I would do some basic research.

I would do some due diligence by using tools like:

I hope this helps.

2 $1 < cost < $2 cost = 7.95
3 $2 < cost < $5 cost * 3.5

So if an item on Ali is $2 ... what does it convert to? $7.95 or (*3.5)$7.00?

I think you better make it like ...

1 0 < cost < $0.99 cost = 6.95
2 $1 < cost < $1.99 cost = 7.95
3 $2 < cost < $4.99 cost * 3.5
4 $5 < cost < $10 cost * 2.5

etc, etc.

I've seen others try this and never heard of any successes. You'd have to be pretty stupid to be unable to see what a load of bullshit it is! ... but then again, there ARE a lot of stupid people in the world.

I'd rather keep things "honest" and up front and sell to the "smart people" as well as the stupid ones and grow my stores good reputation over many years. If I was in for a "quick buck" and didn't expect my store to trade for more than a year ... I may consider deceptive tactics like that. But I'm in for the "long haul" and would prefer to keep my stores squeaky clean. Think of all the shit that would hit the fan if the biggies like eBay and Amazon did that. LOL :)

You know , i don't understand why everyone has been doing it that way. It makes no sense and i think it came from someones posting online (was it Alidropship i dunno). Yours is the correct way of doing it.

1000% AGREED. Free + Shipping is such a pathetic garbage selling tactic. The products are always garbage quality and the shipping a ripoff. But hey, it was added to the Alidropship plugin because people here requested it.

Example: Brand new Samsung S7 for $0 + $800 for shipping = WTF

Some sellers on eBay do similar with REALLY LOW prices to get to the top of "Lowest Price" search results ... but charge $50 to ship a "$5" product (that's really worth $45). The only effect it has on me is to piss me off when I realise what's going on and move on to the next ad.
