for seo reasons
That's it's main reason.
When I go to a dog gear site, I want to search for collars, not read an article on the history of dogs. lol ;)

or is it a bit outdated now.
As Social Media takes over more and more from SEO for providing traffic ... it's use-by date is quickly approaching. But it's still good to have a brief paragraph at least describing what your site is about or what your "mission" or whatever is, if you have space.

I put mine just above the footer. Out of the way.

But if you don't use Social Media a lot and depend on or want to develop SEO for traffic ... it's a "must", along with every other SEO trick you can come up with to get on the first page of results. The first page is all that matters, not many go to the second page. That's why Social Media is my main source of traffic. SEO traffic is a thin layer of icing on top of the Social Media cake for me.
