Add a new section to the Home page

How difficult would it be to add a new section to the home page,
Similar to the Best deals, New Arrivals and, Recently Viewed area but just for a single category.

As I type this out i know this would be a major job.

I'd like to display 8 items form a single category in the same format that the others are.

Thoughts?

OK, So it appears by the lack of replies, this is not possible without some major development and customzation?
