Payment Gateway Question re requesting Registration Number

Sorry I realized after I should have put my post in THIS thread. Forgive the duplicity but here it is again!

Am I correct in stating…...when you have a online store as WELL as applying for a Payment Gateway, you also have to apply for a Merchant Account?

Also providers I have looked at online (for Payment Gateway) are requesting a Registration Number be inputted -- (it is not optional, it is asterisked and therefore it will not let me progress an application unless I input my Registration Number.

However as this is a new venture I am embarking on I don't actually have a Registration Number? Does everyone who is starting up have to provide this to the Payment Gateway people?

And if so, where do I get it (as I am not registering as a company, I will register as a Sole Trader (for now anyway as I am just starting out) - however I see from their online form they are seeking this Reg Number too even if a Sole Trader? -- Therefore do I have to register FIRST as a Sole Trader BEFORE applying for a Payment Gateway? (assuming that is actually how I get a Reg Number).

This is like, the ‘which came first, chicken or the egg’ syndrome.

How do others deal with this, esp those just starting out? Any advice would be appreciated.
