Jump in the "Bounce Rate"

Just before Christmas sales were pretty good. In the beginning of the new year, I decided to add a Facebook Messenger popup that would appear, when a potential customer hit the Homepage, and ask them if I could be of assistance. My bounce rate increased to just shy of 50% and I'm wondering if that may have had anything to do with it, in other words, are people feeling like they're being bothered by the popup approach or is something else at work here?

On the other hand, it is the beginning of the new year and many are financially tapped out after the holiday season. Further, I don't know to what degree coronavirus might be playing into this.

Your thoughts?

I hate this kind of popups, if I see it I would leave the site at once and I assume many visitors feel the same.
