Google merchant and google adwords

I have created a Google merchant account to post products.
My question is , do we need to link Google merchant and Google adwords?
Does Google merchant cannot work by itself?

The reason I ask is because google adwords are paid.

Yes. Google merchant does not work alone. It needs to be linked. Only then it will show on search. Its not a free service.

Good thing is, once linked, u dont need ads created for products individually.

You can create ad and select all products. No keywords. It will be based on ur product description.
