Anyone else having an issue with direct import? I try to use the edit tool to adjust the product before importing, but that rarely brings the window up to edit the product. I spent 2 hours on it adding only 10 products. I can click edit 20 times and every now and again it'll pop up with a window, but even after hitting publish it's still a gamble as to if it actually publishes or not.

You need to wait a bit before the window pops up - approximately about ~10-15 seconds. Also when your chrome browser is overloaded, eg. you opened ~10-30 products in separate browser cards - this will be very hard to edit and import the products. Try opening a maximum of 5 browser tabs and then try importing/editing
